According to data released by South Korean research institution SNE Research on July 3, the global total installed capacity of power batteries in the first five months of this year increased by 23% year-on-year to 285.4GWh.
Looking at the top 10 companies in the world in terms of installed capacity of power batteries, from January to May, Chinese companies still occupied 6 seats, with a combined market share of 64.5%, maintaining a sustained growth trend.
Among them, CATL's installed capacity increased by 31.1% year-on-year to 107GWh, ranking first with a market share of 37.5%. It is also the only company with an installed capacity exceeding 100GWh; BYD increased by 21.1% year-on-year to 44.9GWh, and ranked second with a market share of 15.7%.
SNE pointed out that CATL has become the only battery manufacturer in the world with a market share of more than 30% by supplying batteries to cars of major brands such as ZEEKR, AITO and Ideal in the domestic Chinese market, as well as cars of major global vehicle manufacturers such as Tesla Model 3/Y, BMW iX, Mercedes EQ series and Volkswagen ID series.
Recently, as the competition for hybrid technology among global automakers intensifies, BYD has strategically targeted the pure electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) markets and launched a new hybrid vehicle that can travel 2,100 kilometers on a single charge.
The other four Chinese companies on the list are Sinotruk, EVE Energy, Guoxuan High-tech, and Sunwoda, with installed capacity of 13GWh, 7GWh, 6.4GWh, and 5.9GWh, respectively, up 37.4%, 39.4%, 23.6%, and 62% year-on-year, and market share of 4.5%, 2.4%, 2.3%, and 2.1%, respectively.
Data shows that from January to May this year, the global market share of Korean power batteries in terms of installed capacity fell by 2.8 percentage points year-on-year to 22.3%.
Specifically, LG Energy Solution's installed capacity increased by 5.6% year-on-year to 35.9GWh, ranking third with a market share of 12.6%; SK on increased by 4.2% year-on-year to 13.9GWh, ranking fourth with a market share of 4.9%; Samsung SDI increased by 26.8% year-on-year to 13.7GWh, ranking fifth with a market share of 4.8%.
Panasonic, as the only Japanese company to enter the top 10 of global power battery installed capacity, had an installed capacity of 13.4GWh from January to May, ranking sixth, a negative growth of 26.8% compared with the same period last year.
